Romanian wineries
Romania's southern wine country, stretching from Dealu Mare under the curve of the Carpathians, west through the Olt valley to Drăgășani and Sâmburești, then on to the Mehedinți hills. Sun-warm slopes, limestone soils, and Romania's deepest concentration of native red varieties — Fetească Neagră, Negru de Drăgășani, Novac, Crâmpoșie Selecționată.

A deliberately low-volume Dealu Mare producer in Urlați, working from the Casa Colinelor vineyards. In their own words — "some faces, for some anonymous, for those who know us probably some reckless people, who don't want to produce millions of bottles but happiness."

Founded in 2010 to revive the historic Ștefănești wine region. Twenty-five hectares on the Marcea plateau in Argeș, with a modern winery in the middle of the vineyard running on photovoltaic and geothermal energy.

The foundations of Romania's first organic vineyard, planted by Burgundian winemaker Denis Thomas in Săhăteni, Dealu Mare. Since 2020 led by Romanian owners Mihnea Mihalache and Mihnea Olariu — the organic farming begun in 2003 continues.

Founded in 2007 by Bordeaux-trained engineer Laurent Pfeffer with French co-owners on the former Bibescu estate at Corcova — the same vineyards Prince Antoine Bibesco and Marcel Proust spoke of in the Belle Époque. Certified organic from the 2024 vintage.

Founded in 2003 by oenologist Aurelia Vișinescu on 82 hectares at Săhăteni, Dealu Mare — clay and chalk soils, south-facing slopes. The Artisan line is dedicated to indigenous Romanian varieties from this area.

A tradition begun in 1910 by Prince Antoine Bibescu and Lady Asquith, whose cement-tank cellar is still in use. The Corcova Roy & Dâmboviceanu venture began in 2005 with the replanting of 70 hectares of the former Bibescu vineyards in Mehedinți.

Founded in 2012 by German oenologist Oliver Bauer and Romanian partner Raluca at Drăgășani. About 25,000 bottles a year from rare native varieties — Crâmpoșie Selecționată, Negru de Drăgășani — on old parcels of the Dealurile Olteniei IGP.

The Oprișor cellar began in 1997 when Reh Kendermann replanted around 250 hectares on the Drincea Valley hills in Mehedinți. First VAL DUNA and LA CETATE wines appeared in 2001; the cellar took the Oprișor name in 2008 to emphasise its Oltenian roots.

Founded in 1991 (first commercial vintages in 2000), Davino farms around 89 hectares in Ceptura. Manual ploughing, strict yield management, hand thinning, and a minimum of 30 months in Romanian oak for the top reds.

Founded in 2011 by Austrian co-owner Walter Friedl and Romanian partner Mihai Băniță on an 82-hectare estate at Finţeşti, southern Dealu Mare. Named for the lizards that live in the warm vineyard soils. The winery itself is a heavily-restored 1901 building.

A boutique Dealu Mare estate in Gura Vadului. The current Winehouse opened in 2013, but the family connection goes back a century — to a cellar built by Nicolae and Elena Nicolau, guided to plant here by a dream involving Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu asking for a dark wine.

In 1990, the Negrini family took over the former property of General Teodorini in the Drăgășani vineyards — 10 hectares including a small estate and cellar. The ballerina on every label recalls a love story between a previous owner and an Italian dancer.

Founded in 1994 by Count Guy de Poix as "the very first private company in the Romanian wine sector." Set at 450 m altitude on the 45th parallel in Ceptura, with an early and continuous focus on Fetească Neagră — "the point from which everything began at SERVE."

The Drăgășani estate built up by Prince Barbu Alexandru Știrbey in the early 1920s, nationalised in 1949, and returned to the family in 2001. Now run by Ileana Kripp (born Stirbey) and Jakob Kripp with oenologist Oliver Bauer — close to the indigenous Drăgășani varieties.

A joint project between the Antinori family and oenologist Fiorenzo Rista, founded in 2008. About 100 hectares of vineyard in Urlați and Breaza, with a new winery in Ungureni inaugurated in 2014 by members of the Antinori family. Moving steadily toward ecological viticulture.

Founded in the late 1990s by Romanian, French and Italian investors. Works two of the most important sites in southern Romania: 160 hectares at Stârmina, Mehedinți, near the Danube, and 50 hectares at Sâmburești, Olt. Vinified at Crama Bolovanu and Crama Stârmina.
