A history dating back to 1447…
The first pages of the wine story from Cramele Recaș were written starting from the year 1447, through the existence of a notarial document, currently held in the treasury of the Banat Museum, which confirms the first official mention of the Recaș Estates in written sources.
This document attests that Mihail de Ciorna, the ban of Severin, had purchased the vineyards from these lands from the nobles Ioan and Ecaterina Magyar for 32 florins (the Hungarian gold coin circulating at the time).
A unique cultural and historical heritage…
In the development over the years of the vineyards on the lands of Recaș, we find an important component of local culture over centuries, transformed over time into a true symbol of Banat, considering that over time, the common wine from the Recăș vineyards has been used as a means of exchange in commercial relations between East and West.
Over time, the vineyards in Recaș belonged, one after the other, to either Hungarians or Austrians, who understood and appreciated their value entirely, caring for them with skill and admiration, like the Serbs, Swabians, Croats, and Romanians who followed them.
In the footsteps of the present, towards the future…
The year 1991 represents one of the most important milestones linking the past to the present: in this year, Cramele Recaș company is born, with the mission of taking over the inheritance of tradition and culture from the ancient artisans of these lands, but also to complete the trajectory of development of Banat wine quality from Recaș with significant investments, innovation, and passion.
Currently, Cramele Recaș is a Romanian-British company, operating approximately 1200 hectares of vineyards in Recaș (Timiș County), ranking first among Romanian wine producers by turnover, as well as holding the title of the largest bottled wine exporter from Romania.
Terroir: The Banat footprint of winemaking
The quality of the wine we produce is not merely a matter of commercial appreciation, let alone a “recipe for success.” It often comes from the balance between the specific terroir of the viticultural area with which nature has endowed us and the actions we continuously undertake to protect the environment around which our entire activity revolves.
Agrochemical surveys, carried out every 5 years, provide support for determining the varieties and plots of the nutrient elements present in the soil, while ensuring the vine’s nutritional needs through both soil fertilization and foliar application.
Our winemakers – among the top 100 internationally*
Our team of winemakers consists of Hartley Smithers (originally from Australia, with a 17-year history of winemaking at Cramele Recaș), Nora Iriarte (Spain, with a 13-year history of winemaking at Cramele Recaș), and engineer Florin Voloacă, who oversees the entire wine-making, conditioning, and bottling process.
In 2020, Hartley and Nora were included in the top 100 winemakers internationally, according to “The Drinks Business” publication from the United Kingdom. This distinction is confirmed by the history of each successfully vinified harvest both at Cramele Recaș and internationally, as well as by the numerous medals and accolades obtained by the wines in our portfolio both locally and internationally.
According to the ranking made by the international publication “The Drinks Business” from the United Kingdom, in the year 2020.
